Joh 10:14 “I am the good shepherd; I know My own sheep, and they know Me,
Joh 10:15 just as My Father knows Me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice My life for the sheep.
Joh 10:16 I have other sheep, too, that are not in this sheepfold. I must bring them also. They will listen to My voice, and there will be one flock with one shepherd.
Joh 10:17 “The Father loves Me because I sacrifice My life so I may take it back again.
Joh 10:18 No one can take My life from Me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what My Father has commanded.”
Today I am straying from my journey through Matthew because this passage spoke to me yesterday and I wanted to share it. It made me consider a question that some don’t really think about and it drew me to a deeper understanding of the love and grace of Jesus Christ.
Who killed Jesus?
Some might say the Jews killed Jesus. Other’s might say that Pilate or the Roman soldiers killed Jesus, but, from His own Word, we hear that He “killed” Himself. No this was not suicide it was a gift given freely. That is what makes it so gracious…so amazing. He laid down His Life for all sinners, freely. This means that He had the authority to choose not to lay it down. There is a deliberate choice that Jesus is making. He is making it for two reasons. John 10:18 ends with…”For this is what My Father has commanded”. First He let’s us know that He didn’t “have” to do this; there is nothing about His sacrifice that was forced. He voluntarily gives it for us. Secondly, and I think very importantly, He let’s us know that He is doing it because His Father has commanded it. He does it out of obedience and He does it out of free will and choice prompted by love.
You see…I think that real love; agape love, always brings us to obedience to the Father’s Will. It was true for Jesus and it can be true for us through having His Life in us. Without His perfect life in us, we will only obey out of fear or works and these are filthy rags to God.
My Father in Heaven,
I Praise Your Name today Lord. Your Character and Love are so amazing to me! I can do nothing to earn it and it brings me to a desire to serve you better. I know that I can only do this through You being in Me. I ask now for the Holy Spirit to come into my life today and give me the life of Christ. I thank You for this and I consider myself to be reconciled and justified because of what Jesus freely did for me. Amen.
